The Oregon Trail
In my AP US History class we played the Oregon Trail and took notes on the hardships faced by our characters and compared those to what we learned about the Oregon trail during our study of manifest destiny. This activity fits within the pillar of recognize perspectives because we were able to portray a character that experienced the challenges and benefits that a traveler of the trail would encounter. Although there are many differences between the game and the actual trail due to a plethora of inaccuracies, the game gave us a better understanding of the settlers perspectives. Furthermore, the Oregon Trail supported the concept of this pillar in that it gave me another perspective on the Oregon trail, different than the objective perspective given by the textbook. This source addresses my overarching question in that it portrayed stereotypes of native Americans in the game, which date back to the 1500s.
